History of Brough Superior Motorcycles

Above on the page there are several PDF Manuals for BROUGH SUPERIOR Motorcycles.

The famous BROUGH SUPERIOR brand was created in Nottingham (Great Britain) back in 1902. And initially it even produced three-wheeled vehicles.

The company's first motorcycle was created around the same time as prototypes of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers on the planet - at the very beginning of the 20th century.

By 1908, the firm had developed a whole range of two-wheelers that used V-engines with power ranging from 2.5 to 5 hp.

Progress in engineering did not keep itself waiting constantly until the outbreak of the WW1.

The above engine performance has been increased to 8 hp.

The most impressive results were obtained back in 1913. It was then that the world saw the updated 497 cc Brough Superior engine with modern performance (piston stroke - 64.5 mm, cylinder diameter - 70 mm.).

The checkpoint of this brainchild of engineering had 2 gears.

It was this motor that began to be installed on many models of the brand. At that time, William Brough's motorcycles were equipped with both chain and belt drives.

The upgraded engine with a 3-speed gearbox did not take long to appear either.

This power unit had a more substantial compression ratio and an unusual cylinder lubrication system.

After the end of the world war, the business of the British company went up sharply, especially in terms of technology.

Lighter aluminum pistons began to be installed in the engines. Crankshaft and camshaft bearings have been updated.

At this time, the son of William Brough began to show much more activity.

In 1919, he separated from his father and founded Brough Superior. Nowadays, this brand is better known for the SS100 Minichamps model.

William Brough himself was very unhappy with the above department, jokingly calling the product of the child "Degraded". Nevertheless, time has put everything in its place.

The father's company did not produce motorcycle equipment for so long (until 1926).
